Here are all the surgical methods to cover an exposed root

- Have your gums withdrawn and would you like to return everything as before?
- You have tooth sensitivity and your dentist told you it could be the recession's fault?
Let's see what are the most suitable surgical methods to cover an exposed root.
How to Protect Exposed Root Surfaces

Pain in chewing or brushing, sometimes even just breathing in the air ... these are just some of the problems you can face with an exposed root. In all this the anti-aesthetic effect overlaps, which undoubtedly has its important value.

In one of the old articles, we have already addressed the issue of a recession of the gums, describing causes and consequences. But what do you do when you want to cover it?

A recession can lead to three problems: pain, sensitivity, and poor aesthetics.

Orient yourself with the Miller Classification

In this regard, in 1985 a clinician by the name of Miller made a very useful and effective classification to order the degrees of gum recession based on their severity:

Class 1: superficial recession with sustained interdental papillae;
Class 2: deep recession with sustained interdental papillae;
Class 3: deep recession with interdental tissues reabsorbed but not at the same level as the defect;
Class 4: deep recession with interdental tissues whose resorption exceeds the recession itself.
As a guide, it is possible to cover an exposed root if it falls into classes 1 or 2.

In the case of class 3, the recession of the recession begins to become difficult with success rates between 50 and 70%.

In the case of class 4, it is definitely unlikely with a percentage below 10%.

Surgery to cover an exposed root

The premise for each surgery session is that before proceeding with the operation it is advisable for the patient to be free of plaque and tartar. Therapy can be planned after the normal professional hygiene session.

The methods that can be used to recover a recession through surgery are many and often very refined. Basically, they are subdivided into: pedunculated grafts and free grafts.

Pedunculated grafts

Covering an exposed root with a pedicled graft requires that the gum adjacent to the defect is physically "moved" or rotated and then adapted to the area to be rehabilitated. A donor area and a receiving area are thus determined, respectively understood as the recession to be treated and the portion of gum to be moved or rotated.

The flap of gum used to cover the exposed root will not be completely detached from the donor area. It will be enough to loosen the underlying muscular tension and stretch it on the tooth with the defect.

This is a microsurgery intervention that requires normal anesthesia. It also has excellent success rates to cover multiple recessions.

Free grafts

Free grafts have the same function as pedunculated ones but they have the difference that they are separated in toto from the donor area. Before surgery, an adequate donor area is chosen.

Generally, it is the mucous membrane of the palate at the premolars and the donor tissue is taken from there with or without epithelium.

Subsequently, after preparing the receiving area in correspondence with the recession to be rehabilitated, the portion of tissue collected is adapted and sutured.

Also, in this case, it is possible to treat recessions on more teeth.

But are interventions suitable for everyone?

Certainly, treating a recession is the dream of all those who are affected, but these therapeutic methods are not suitable for all patients.

For example, as already mentioned in the last article, one of the main causes of receding gums is vigorous brushing. Because of this, if the brushing exerted with excessive force persists, performing a surgical therapy to rehabilitate the defect is completely ineffective.
In fact, the covering is later destined to fail and the gum will recede again.

It may, therefore, be advisable for the patient to purchase an electric toothbrush with the pressure sensor so that an indicator light indicates whether the force exerted during brushing is adequate or not.

In this regard, if you are curious, find out if an electric or manual toothbrush is better by clicking here.

The colored Smart Ring lights up if too much pressure is exerted or when you have to change the arch. Furthermore, if the patient has ongoing pathologies or conditions that interfere with the operation or that would interfere with healing, it would be advisable to postpone the operation or choose another option.

For example:

- Heart attack immediately less than six months;
- Transplant immediately less than six months;
- Non-compensated diabetes;
- Pregnancy;
- Chemotherapy in place;
- Patient with unstable angina;
- Subjects with periodontitis or gingivitis in place;
 -Poorly cooperative patient;
 -Growing subjects.

Post-intervention tricks ...

After the radicular covering operations, the patient is usually advised not to brush in the area affected by the operation and to proceed for about 2/3 weeks with rinses with a chlorhexidine-based disinfectant mouthwash.

The idea of inserting a compress into the donor area to protect the operated area and to promote healing can also be considered.

Treating an exposed root is a therapeutic option that allows you to solve problems related to a gum recession: pain, sensitivity, and poor aesthetics.

Understanding the degree of severity of the recession and framing the patient from the point of view of general health is essential to adequately plan the intervention.
