Nutrition during the oral postoperative period

Here we will see how to plan the patient's post-surgical feeding, so as to allow an optimal post-operative course and at the same time guarantee high nutritional quality.

Nutrition in the patient undergoing oral surgery needs special attention, especially in the days immediately following the operation. The traumatic condition of the post-intervention tissues reduces the chewing ability, furthermore swelling and any mild painful symptoms reduce the oral opening.

The mechanical action of chewing can also worry the patient about possible complications such as the detachment of the sutures or the penetration of food residues into the wounds.

For every moment of the day, we recommend combinations of optimal foods for the operation just undergone, well balanced from a nutritional point of view, attentive to other existing pathological conditions and to any further needs and preferences of the patient.

For post-surgical feeding, in general, we recommend soft, non-acid, non-hot and non-spicy foods.

These foods must guarantee a balanced supply of nutrients and energy while respecting personal habits and food choices.

Citrus fruits, vinegar, tomatoes, drinks and hot foods (which must be prepared and left to cool before consumption), pepper, chili and spices, seeds and dried fruit and foods that contain them, foods to be torn with the teeth with consistency are excluded from the diet. filamentous or fibrous, hard chewing foods (such as baked goods).

In the first post-surgical day, vegetables can be eaten: carrots, courgettes, squash, asparagus, cauliflower, broccoli, and champignon mushrooms, after boiling. Protein intake can be guaranteed by an omelet or a boiled fish fillet.

For breakfast, the next day, cappuccino or tea with well-soaked biscuits is fine, while snacks, during the day, can be composed of a yogurt and fruit smoothie, or a fruit puree or even ice cream.

From the third day, the pasta (well cooked) and the meat (minced) are gradually reintroduced, while from the sixth day all the foods can be reinserted, taking care however to avoid for at least two months those that are too hard and those to be torn with the teeth.

Ultimately, even in such a delicate moment as the post-surgical one, the patient continues to follow a completely normal and controlled diet, thus being able to count on an absolutely peaceful course.
